A SCANDINAVIAN INSPIRED ROCKING CHAIR

Design Brief: use local inspiration while living and studying in Copenhagen to create an object to sit on based on Scandinavian furniture design

Solution: a rocking chair showcasing the light, clean, functional values of Danish design

  • Visiting local design museums and stores in Copenhagen

  • Touring furniture factories and show rooms around Denmark

  • Embarking on a week-long study tour in Sweden and Finland

  • Measuring many chairs and people to study ergonomics

FINAL PRODUCT

 

In addition to carefully calculated lengths and angles for a visually and physically pleasing geometry, I wanted to focus on making the functional details such as joints the decorative accents of the piece. Due to size constraints of the shipping crates, this rocking chair has a smaller profile than its classic inspiration; however, it does not compromise comfort nor a smooth stable rock.
