IDEATION & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

At this stage I knew I wanted to incorporate a mini solar panel charger, but needed to decide between a school bag and a backpacking pack. Given the time constraint and brand focus, I decided to move forward with a hybrid of both and create a backpack for school and day hikes.

PROTOTYPING

I created a model of the backpack in Rhino and used the flatten feature to create a stencil (first in paper and later in cardboard). This prototype was my first experience pattern making, and allowed me to work through challenges such as determining the correct order of operations.

FINAL PROTOTYPE

After problem solving and re-evaluating some of my previous design choices I decided to eliminate the hip straps, change the pockets to be incorporated into the design (opposed to appliqué pockets), make the bottom seam be internal (instead of covered in binding tape), and add the reflective stripe.

FEATURES

  • Waterproof body, zippers, and inner liner

  • Simple body construction from one piece of fabric to eliminate unnecessary seams

  • Netted pocket for solar panel connected to an interior pocket that holds a phone or charge stick

  • Two interior pockets

  • Padded laptop sleeve

  • Top pocket for keys and a wallet

  • Vertical zipper to allow easy access to the bottom of the bag

  • Parallel reflective stripe for visibility while biking

  • Safety whistle on chest strap buckle

  • Ergonomic straps
